…and grand naivety to reject that “warped” perspective outright. Let’s agree the vast majority of the immigrants in the recent flood are both needed in our economy and bring an admirable work ethic (I strongly believe both are correct). But let’s also be realists.

The 2024 DHS Homeland Threat Assessment explicitly calls out the increasing numbers of people with terrorist connections coming across the southern border. In terms of magnitude we’re talking about hundreds (page 12). It’s a growing problem. It may not seem that way from an ivory tower or an air-conditioned workspace full of business casual sensibilities. It does for people more familiar with sweaty realities of protecting people and places.
